PARTNER

My interest in law and in particular criminal law began at University.  Criminal Law was a subject I enjoyed immensely and it ultimately ignited my passion for the subject.  The State has many powers, powers which must be exercised appropriately and not abused.  The idea of being able to hold the State and its organisations to account when potential abuses occur along with my personal strong sense of justice made the decision to become a criminal defence lawyer an easy one.

Originally called to the Bar at Lincolns Inn in 1998, I completed the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test to become a solicitor.  Born and bred in London, I gained experience at a specialist criminal practice in North London.  I remained in practice in London for 16 years representing clients at some of the busiest police stations, Magistrates Courts and Crown Courts in the country.

Protecting the rights of individuals is a fundamental right and one that underpins everything I do for my clients.  I am measured in my approach, put clients at ease during difficult times and explain things in plain English.  I am a persuasive and tenacious advocate not afraid of making strong representations when advancing the case for my clients at the police station or in court.

I have worked with leading barristers and gained invaluable experience dealing with the some of the most complicated, technical cases and clients.  I continue to have strong and established links with barristers and their Chambers nationwide but particularly in London and Yorkshire.

I am currently a duty solicitor and a higher court advocate. I am passionate about training future lawyers.  I have been a mentor to law students at the University of Derby for over 10 years and have previously taught Advanced Criminal Litigation on the Legal Practice Course at Nottingham Law School.  I have featured in the Legal 500.

Previously I have held positions on the Criminal Practitioners Group (Law Society) and the Ethnic Minority Lawyers Division (Law Society). I have been a former committee member for the Society of Asian Lawyers, a school governor and a member of the Valuation Tribunal of England and Wales.

I speak Punjabi and conversational Urdu.

RUTH McGREGOR-HAMANN

CONSULTANT SOLICITOR

I qualified as a solicitor in 2011.

I am a  youth justice lawyer specialising in working with children and young people.

My career has been inspired by my experience as an intern for a charity in Texas, providing representation to people facing the death penalty.

I trained, qualified and practiced for 7 years at a well established top tier Legal 500 firm in London. Here I helped establish a specialist youth team within the criminal department.  I then went on to work with other firms as a youth specialist criminal defence lawyer whilst maintaining strong links with Just For Kids Law.

I currently administer the National Advice Line for the Youth Justice Legal Centre providing invaluable advice to children, families and practitioners on issues relating to youth justice law and practice.

I continue to offer support and training to Youth Justice Services all over England and Wales.

HAMZAH SHAH

LEGAL ASSISTANT / POLICE STATION REPRESENTATIVE

From a young age I was surrounded by lawyers.  My parents are lawyers and so were their friends.  Law always intrigued me.  As I got older, it was something I thought I might enjoy doing.  I spent a few days shadowing my father in court and decided I would like to pursue a career in criminal law.

I have always enjoyed working and engaging with people and felt criminal law would allow me to do that.

I am a fully accredited police station representative. I represent clients at the police station and assist the senior solicitors in criminal litigation.  They have instilled in me the importance of client care and working to a high standard.

I am currently training to be a solicitor in the criminal courts.

In my spare time I play cricket, watch football and attend the gym.  I am also involved in a local boxing promotion company.

MICHELLE DOUGLAS

POLICE STATION REPRESENTATIVE / LITIGATOR

I have worked for several large regional firms initially as a legal secretary and then as an accredited police station representative.

What attracted me to Shah Hague Solicitors is knowing their strong emphasis on client care and the personal touch they offer to all of the people they represent.  I have always prided myself on looking after clients and I knew I would flourish in the working environment Shah Hague Solicitors created.

Currently I represent clients at the police station and litigate on both magistrates and crown court cases.  I work alongside the senior solicitors and experienced barristers on complex criminal matters.

In my spare time I enjoy swimming, watching football, cooking and charity fundraising.
